Monday Message

"More than ever before, we need to learn and apply the principles of economic self-reliance. We do not know when the crisis involving sickness or unemployment may affect our own circumstances. We do know that the Lord has decreed global calamities for the future and has warned and forewarned us to be prepared. "(President Ezra Taft Benson)

With all that is going on, it feels like we are getting pecked to death. It is hard to keep on in it all.  We must try to find comfort and peace. We need to keep on stocking up and keep learning skills.

Our preps need to include things like needles and thread. If you have a sewing machine, learn how to use it better. If you don't, be looking at yard sales and thrift stores but be sure to try them before you buy them. Be on the lookout for dehydrators, jars and any canning supplies, look for fabric and sewing supplies, look for zippers and buttons, look for knitting and crocheting supplies, etc.

Add to that list, good books, also children's books, puzzles, board games.

Look for back-up items like blenders and toasters, things you might need. I try to do this because inevitably I will have one die at the worst time and in the winter I might not have any luck finding used and will have to pay higher prices.

Look for the old church type cookbooks where everyone put their favorites in and use the basic ingredients.

Start preparing for winter, I know it’s early but maybe it will cool you down some. Do you have ice melt? That is what I will need more of. How about ice scrapers? Shovels? Try to think ahead. But if we never get out of the heatwave, no snow will come - OK, that is a joke :p

But we need to think ahead and plan ahead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlazQtUfJ-0 - remember to build your cooking from scratch skills.

So back to these times being hard, they will paralyze us if we let them...don't let them.

Use this time to learn your skills, they can be therapeutic.

I am working on this shawl for winter. The yarn is homespun, some my sister spun and the rest I spun. I will be learning new techniques.

I also am still working on the critters. I am learning so many things by working these up. l love little cotton rabbits. She makes the cutest critters, her patterns are clearly written unlike some others I have done, bringing me back to hers. Not a commercial, just a very happy customer.

So find something that will make you smile and build a skill.

My garden is winding down. I have never had success growing watermelon. I am so so excited that these yummies came out of my garden this year!  You might remember me telling you one year that I was excited I had one a bit smaller than the size of a tennis ball, then one day it disappeared without a trace. I was so disappointed. The next day it showed up again in the same spot. A critter took it, ate on it, must not have liked it and brought it back. Too funny.

Gus said, if only he had longer legs and thumbs he would take up weaving.

Missy says, always stay safe no matter what.

  1. Based on the behavior of our squirrels, cold weather will be late this year. We have learned after 27 years here that they know.

  5. I love all your knits. The little critters are my absolute favorite.
I get teased so much about prepping for Autumn in the Summer, Winter in the Autumn. It is loving teasing but all my friends tell me they do love it and how I am always prepared when they are standing in the store fighting for the last of anything.
DH & I keep doubles of everything we depend on because we know it will go out.
Two weeks before lockdown I walked out of the store with fans. My DH said to me "Why did you buy more fans?" I told him if one blows up during lockdown we won't be able to get a fan. He thought that was so funny. Two weeks later a fan went out and he was like "You were right!" LOL.

    1. You have no idea how many times I hear...you were right. It is just the way I am wired to prepare for everything I can and prices are going up. Manufactured pieces and parts are backlogged it just seems wise. I would rather pay a dollar used and set it aside then twenty in the dead of winter. I know I can't prepare for everything but what I do will help over the rough spots. Great job

  6. As a tip as well, do all your lamps work? Have enough lightbulbs? I am noticing in shops that supplies of those are running low and that is in Northern Europe. All of them in my apartment are replaced now and i have some extra now

    1. Yes great tip it is always the oil in the lamp story in the scriptures I think of plus we have had enough storms if one stores oil, lamps be sure you have wicks and matches. I find one light bulb goes out like dominoes out they go one by one after it. One time we lost power just as it got dark it was the whole town often it is one street or half the town but this time it was everyone...so I lit the lamps I keep on the table now those lamps set on a mirror which gives even more light but we had those lit people would go out in their cars to see what the problem was or who was effected but when they went by they slowed right down why when the whole town was out this one house had lights. I am sure they were scratching their heads so yes a great tip keep them coming. I knew there was no way covid wasn't coming with what we were seeing in China in the beginning I thought like you light bulbs batteries tinfoil and siran wrap dish soap that kind of thing I wanted to be getting more in and as we all saw toilet paper I was glad to have what I did I think what rattled me the most was seeing flour and yeast go out....i always have it on hand and always teaching people to make bread I had no idea so many knew how to bake bread...it rattled me because seeing it gone I thought OK this is really going to be rough for so many. I still feel it is going to be rough yet ahead of us. Thank you

    2. By keeping a sourdough starter on hand, one can make baked goods without commercial yeast!!

  7. I was just reading a 1951 vintage magazine and the test kitchen had a letter from a reader saying she cooked watermelon rind (pare off the green but leave a bit of pink meat) and that it tasted much like summer squash. The test kitchen tried and agreed! I just thought that was interesting and thought you might find it so as well.

    2. When I was in Atlanta once, I ate pickled watermelon rind served at a nice restaurant. Slices were sized like bread and butter pickles, and it was excellent….who knew;)
